Some general thoughts:
1. These contestants aren't going to look or perform much differently by the end of the season, are they? I'm not seeing a whole lot of transforming or growth and without my CI glasses on, I find that a bit disappointing. But I guess you like your idols to keep that coffeehouse vibe? 2. I thought Gavin was great and, btw, he is adorable. 3. July rocks. That is all. Love her. 4. Lord Weber needs to get with half of the contestants and bitch slap them until they learn to open their eyes. 6. Unplugged to me means NO band. Either play an instrument, or have one person accompanying you. If you have the UCLA marching band accompanying you it is technically unplugged, but not at all what I would hope to see on "unplugged" night. So I was pretty disappointed in having so many musicians playing. 7. None of these contestants are showing me a voice that can soar, or emotions that reel you in. Sorry, but they are just not. Theo comes the closest. Now let me put on my Canadian glasses so I can see things in perspective, and not in relation to AI. 1. Theo was incredible. Loved, loved, loved him tonight. Blew it out of the park. I FELT something emotional during his performance, even though I didn't know the song. Absolutely took on Gavin's advice and it made him better. Better with the eye shutting tonight, but could still benefit from a visit from Lord Weber. Gap. 2. Mookie, I like him the best of the quirky performers. First of all, I love The Band. The fact he even knew of them? Even better. I really hope he stays. Lord Weber needs to get with him and have a chat. He is still benefiting from my love of his performance last week. 3. Amberly. Yes she has a very mature and beautiful voice. Yes she is beautiful. Yes, she can connect with a song. But I need her to do something different. Not her fault the theme was unplugged, but this was just more of the same old, same old for me. I really hope she stays, even though I can't differentiate any of her performances. Gap. 4. I enjoyed Earl much more this week. I am still not seeing or hearing what the judges are, especially all of the personality. He is intriguing, but I'm not sure my CI glasses are a strong enough prescription to get the OTT love. 5. Mitch was better this week, but I still wasn't loving his voice. The song choice really hurt him. Seems like a nice guy, though. 6. Drew slipped way down the ranks for me tonight. Bad song choice, precocious performance, did nothing vocally. Also, Drew call Lord Weber. Gap. 7. Two weeks in a row I can't rate Mark last. I'm scaring myself. Yes, his voice is forgettable, his performance with the right hand emphasizing important lyrics a la Archie (and really important lyrics with an added head bob), he is just annoying me to no end. And the last thing that boy needed to wear was a brown faux guayabera shirt. WTF. He looked like a fucking Hostess cupcake. But he was still better than... 8. Sebastian. I basically hated everything about his performance. Again. He tries to show me how much he is feeling the music, daddyo, and it makes me not.feel.the.music at all. I hated his hat, too. I need to go through this thread and see who loves him--I'm taking names and you will be dtm, for sure. |

I had doubts about Unplugged night but tonight, everyone performed very well.
1. Mookie - Quite possibly, my favo performance of the season. Love the song choice. Reminded me of a Dixieland jazz band. He minimized the growling which I liked. I like the hat and the vest. 2. Amberly - What a smart song choice to pick the "Old Navy" song. It's the Amberly we all know and love. 3. Mitch - I liked it a lot despite what the judges said. Maybe it's the fiddle, but it was something different. 4. Drew - 5. Earl - That's the second time that I'm liking an Earl performance. Is he growing on me? Perhaps. 6. Sebastian - He's back on track again but I'm afraid his time is up. Any song with harmonica is always good. 7. Theo - He did well but I liked the others better. 8. Mark - Good vocal but again, there were others that I enjoyed more. He was the 'worst' of the best bunch. First time that I liked every performance on the same night. Was that Mikey behind Jake? And why did no one warn me of Carly Ho? |

Overall, I thought tonight's was a good show. Not stellar, but pretty good. I think everyone but Mitch had an above-average performance compared to their
previous ones. My ratings for the night:
Best 1. Theo- duh. He's number one week in and out. This is his to lose. But if the Canadian Idol is not him, it might be... 2. Mookie- I agree with Sass- the New Orleans feel to the song was wonderful. I showed the performance to my mom, told her Mookie's age, and she said "He's much more mature than Archuleta." It's those mature performance skills and the "cool" factor that could take him to the top. Above Average 3. Amberly- Not amazing, but a very fun performance. Her voice sounded great with the staccato of the song. 4. Earl- I don't like him in general, but I thought he gaved a very nuanced performance tonight. 5. Drew- I thought he sounded wonderful, but he didn't follow Gavin's advice. He sang the song exactly as Maroon 5 sings it. An original performance would have moved him up. 6. Sebastian- a vast improvement. I thought the singing, while not great, was as stylistic as it comes and that counts for something. OK 7. Mark- Tonight was the best he's ever sounded. If others had done worse, he'd be higher on this list. But not a bad night for him. Almost makes me respect him. Almost. Not Great 8. Mitch- one of my three favorites overall, but not so hot tonight.

Most of the top 8 were pretty impressive tonight. I want so badly to see a Mookie/Theo/Amberly/Earl top 4, but I fear that Amberly is going to fall victim to
the legion of Earl/Theo fans.
Absolutely LOVED: 1. Theo- one of my favourite songs, and I was worried, because no one sings it like Serena. I'm glad he changed it up and made it his own. He is seriously the best of this group. For those of you who aren't familiar with the song, YouTube Serena Ryder "Weak in the Knees". Doesn't matter how many times you listen to it, you will get goosebumps every time. 2. Mookie- I LOVE this kid. He is so mature and so original. Sebastian and Drew must be sacrificed so that Mookie can pick up their voters. Really Liked: 3. Amberly- Her best performance yet. She reminds me so much of Carly Rae, only more consistent vocally. 4. Earl- He is really growing on me. I love his voice and his style, and it was nice to see him sitting down. 5. Mitch- This is the first time that I've actually liked Mitch. I didn't recognize, and really don't care for the song he chose, but it was perfect for HIM. Falling Quickly: 6: Drew - Decent song choice, decent vocal, but he really didn't knock it out of the park. Rock bottom: 7. Mark- Vocally okay, but I still can't stand him. Get him off the stage. 8. Sebstian- Leave. Now. |

Now let me put on my Canadian glasses so I can see things in perspective, and not in relation to AI. For me basically everything about American Idol sucks donkey balls so when comparing the two shows CI comes out on top by a large margin. After AI ends I choose to pretend it doesn't exist and focus on the best Idol shows, CI and Aussie Idol. I only acknowledge AI this season because it was more like CI and I liked that. plus Cookie was there and ascended to his rightful spot on top of the AI throne. As for "Unplugged" night it was a stupid theme to do with this year's crop but it was probably pre-planned to some degree before the Top 10 was chosen. In other years it has been excellent and they usually don't do it in the big theatre. They've done it in the Masonic Temple in years passed which is a smaller venue and it was more intimate and killer. Everyone is already unplugged all the time this year so as a theme it was basically, do whatever you want, just don't use an electric guitar. I liked the episode though. CI4's "Unplugged Night" will always be the best though because of this: She pretty much had the competition sewed up after that. Back to Amberly and Theo and smartguy's comments. As I've said numerous times before to you I think you have spectacularly shitty taste in music so I'm not at all surprised you find their styles to be "boring." Just because they aren't singing shitty ass Nickelback songs and know the definition of subtle doesn't make them boring. Nor are they boring just because they do the same style every week. IMO someone only becomes boring when they sound exactly the same every week and while I'd agree that they tend to stay in their comfort zone I can differentiate between their performances, they aren't boring imo. Also "The Way I Am" was the perfect song for Amberly, she needed to do a more uptempo number but that was the kind of uptempo song that suited her. Something like "You and I Both" didn't suit her at all. *goes to watch TWIA on YT* Also points because even people with shitty music taste who'd never heard of Ingrid Michaelson would know the song because it was on the Old Navy commercials. |

I'm just not engaged...their performances aren't noisy enough for me. But, I don't have much choice...there's no Dwight for me to root for
this season. Amberly is the class of the field, plus why wouldn't I root for the only girl amongst all that testosterone?

My rankings for the night
1.Earl - I actually think I like his version better than the original. There's just something so honest about him when he's just sitting and singing. I hope he does it more often. Second week i've had him at number 1, and this is a guy I couldn't stand at the beginning. 2.Amberly - I can now check off my number 1 on the list of thing I wish Amberly would sing. 3.Theo - I'm fairly certain he's gonne end up winning, which won;t be so bad since he's probably the most consistant one there. Gap 4.Mookie - I'm unfamiliar with the song, but from what I could tell he did a good job. I prefer growler rocker Mookie more though. 5.Mitch - Of all the songs he had to choose from....why that? I was so looking forward to him this week and he let me down big time. Oddly enough, he has some great Ryan Adams covers on Youtube, yet didn't sing one of his songs. 6.Drew - Hate Hate Hate Maroon 5, I don't hate Drew as much as a lot of people do...but he is really boring. He's enver been nearly as good as that one performance they showed of im in Toronto Bigger Gap 7.Sebastian - I'm done defending him....in retropsect Oliver should have stayed. Sebastian just doesn't have it. He's too wrapped up in this retro rockabilly thing to ever do anything credible. 8.Mark - Same as always. Complete waste of space |
