i read an article a few years back in Time magazine that placed Jesus' birth on April 17, which also happens to be my birthday.

Buddha and Jesus were both Aries. No surprise, really, since Aries are gods.

Can someone explain this sun sign/moon sign/rising sign stuff to me? All I ever knew was there everyone had a sign, their one single sign. Then I start dating these chicks that smell of patchouli and are REAL easy to get in the sack and they start trying to explain all this other gobledeegook to me. Never caught onto it. 'Course I was usually trying to get 'em undressed at the time so I wasn't really paying attention.

Now, without that distraction, perhaps I can finally get a grasp of just what the hell it is you people are talking about.

The 12 astrological signs are too generic to properly describe all of the different people on the planet. When the locations of all the planets are charted based on your birth date, location and time, you can go much deeper into why you are you. Your Rising Sign represents the zodiac sign on the Eastern horizon when you were born. It often represents the "face" you show the world. The sign the Moon is in at your birth represents your heart.

Me for example, I'm Capricorn. I do strive for the tallest mountain, but with Cancer as my rising sign, I come off as a caring homebody to others. Add to that my Taurus Moon and my Cancer domesticity and Capricorn practicality are only enhanced.

Your sun sign is just one part of you astrological chart. Different 'planets' (incl the sun and moon) govern different aspects of your personality. The sun, moon and ascendant (rising sign) are the dominant forces in your chart.

It gets complicated, but basically the sun governs your inner self (your basic ego), the moon governs you emotions (your id or primal self) and your rising sign governs how you interact with others -- the image you present to the world. That's why it's incorrect to say everyone is one of 12 'signs'. Your astrological chart is a combination of many planets and signs. There are literally trillions of combinations. Pretty much.

Then there's your Venus sign, which governs how you receive love.
Your Mars sign, which governs how you express love.
Your Jupiter sign, which governs what things encourage you and give you joy
And your Saturn sign, which governs your responsibilities and the things that hold you back.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are slow-moving planets, so they are usually referred to as generational signs, because they cover such large groups of people.
