Dan is a beautiful, caring person. We just caught the tale end of a conversation he is having with Steven and how Steven is hurt that his parents have not accepted the gay side of him. Steven said he is very hurt they can not accept all of him. Dan counseled him that Steven can control how he reacts to their rigidity, but if Steven is so hurt by it, Steven's decision to remove himself from their lives is probably a good one. Dan would make a great counselor. It pays better than being a teacher, but it is expensive to get the advanced degrees and practioner hours to get licensed.

When my brother died from AIDS back in 93, he had a partner. That partner was an habitual liar. He was not in my brother's will, nor on his insurance policies. I was my brother's beneficiary. Our family gave all of their household furnishing to his partner, along with my brother's car title, my brother's jetskis and the trailer to go with them, and I also gave him a large % of the insurance policy. We didn't have to. We did the decent thing. We also bought his plane ticket to come up for my brother's service and ashes scattering along Lake Michigan. Too bad other parents just do so much harm to their children. After my brother "came out" at the age of 19, my father told us he just knew all along. He didn't care, my brother was still his son. Of all people to react to my brother being gay, I was very surprised my dad was so cool about it. My sister, mom and I all went through the female guilt phase thinking what did we do to "cause" that. However, I met a really nice, younger gay guy about the same time as when my brother died and he explained to me that it is not the environment, it just is. He also said no one voluntarily joins the world's most hated minority community and that made a lot of sense to me. My life has been blessed by both my brother and meeting this guy who helped me understand things. Wow, too much introspection, I gotta go get some lunch and get my snark back on.
