You dont learn a foreign language because you're going to travel to Europe one day. You learn it to open your mind and become smarter. Students used to study Latin and Greek. You dont have to go to Spain and France to see those language spoken, you can go across the street.
Where the fuck did you see me object to the idea of trying to learn a foreign language. I've tried very hard to make a point that any idoit should be able to grasp, yet your side somehow keeps missing it.
Europeans learn foreign languages out of necessity due to the sheer number of languages spoken there. And they are able to become fluent in these languages because of how closely the people who speak them are grouped together. It's not because they are intellectually superior or that they are more open in their thinking, they do it because it's necessary.
I took three years of German in high school, and another in college. And to date I've had zero occasions to speak it with anyone who is either from
Germany or is fluent speaking it. Despite that, it doesn't mean I'm against taking language courses and trying to learn a new language. But the fact
is that the majority of US citizens who take foreign language courses will have very few, if any, occasions to actually use what they've learned.
