If my earnings suddenly went up, I would certainly look into it. So, my question is... how can people be unaware that someone else is using their SSN for years and years? Also, how can they get past the IRS every year? The victim will be filing a return based on what he earned, but the IRS will have info from SS indicating that there were additional earnings for that same SSN. My cousin and her husband used to own a restaurant. She said that every quarter after she filed the quarterly earnings report to the SS Admin, she would get a letter back questioning the SSN's of most of the kitchen staff. So those SSN's were having earnings reported that the real owner didn't know about.

When will people wake up and tell the banks to go fuck themselves!!!! I only pay for things I sign up for. If someone else got money out of a dumb ass bank, that is their problem.

Four years later, I got a call from a woman who said she was the wife of the real guy that had his identity stolen. They were being audited by the IRS for failure to report the four months of income from my company. We had reported all the payroll taxes and filled all the forms with employees names and SSN. The poor real guy was getting an earful from the IRS. I had to go to downtown Chicago and meet the real guy at the IRS office with my files and copies of the SSN and drivers license. Another laborer who works for us told me that the guy in question had changed his name at least four times while he worked in the construction industry. First of all, unfortunately, if you find yourself the victim of identity theft - the institution where the theft occured is legally prohibited from telling you the identity or location of the person that is using your number. This is to stop you from doing something stupid that will land you in jail. Same goes if you have a background check done for pre-employment purposes and another name comes up on your credit report. Your potential employer is not permitted to disclose this to you. If someone is using your number to open accounts that they have no intention of paying off, you will find out soon enough, but you won't be responsible for their debts. On the bright side, you will be entitled to all of their social security benefits they have accrued.

He did not use it to work.

It went through ok, but a few months later there was some glitch because the SS Admin got a quarterly report from some company in So Cal reporting additional earnings on the same SSN. Turns out that the SSN had been used by the thief for many years and that there had been many quarterly reports of income in both the midwest and in So Cal. So, my point is why did it take so long for this "victim" to figure out that something was wrong? Their SSN earnings were wrong for years and they didn't know it? Do people not even look at the statement the SS Admin sends out every year? If that statement lists earnings that are more than you earned, would you not wonder why? Give me a break! And to the poster who said it's the bank's problem if they issue a credit card to an identity thief. It's a MAJOR problem to the victim's whose credit record has been fouled up. It can take years and a lot of money to get that mess straightened out.

Type #1 = the lowlife that wants to get something for nothing, so he uses your credit history to get stuff he has no intention of paying for Type #2 = the illegal alien who wants a job that pays better than cutting your grass or cleaning your house Can we please focus on type #2? Posts: 434 (05/22/08 4:40 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	the illegal alien using your ss# will not file taxes. i heard a story on the radio the other day about a gal that is 16 years old and her ss# has been used illegally for 12 years! they have been to IRS and state agencies and can get absolutely no help, nor will they give her a clean slate and issue a new number. in fact, irs was aware of it and they are going after the person, however, why should a 16 year old kid have to live with that shit, why not expire the number and give her a new one???? wtf!
