Its one thing to pick up a bar tab (without announcing it in advance)...but giving people gas money is not cool.

Could be, beep. It's near Grand Central Station and it's one of the lower priced hotels in the area.
GBIAD, I was going to offer them $50 for me to bang his wife, but at this point, I don't want to even have to do that. |

maybe you could just pay them to carry your bags or polish your shoes or something.

hwamf, there's no doubt in my mind I will be insisting on picking up the check for brunch, it's just I don't like people who feel entitled to it.
If they could afford it and went, that's one thing. I have a skosh more respect for them knowing they couldn't afford to go there and bailing, regardless of what it would eventually cost them ($0). |

She said about $100 per couple or so, depending on how many mimosas we had.

I would never ever talk to someone if they handed me a $50 for gas money at a wedding. That is offensive in the extreme!
My son is a huge brunch fan so when he and I were in NYC last summer one of his requirements was brunch. We went to the brunch at Peacock Alley at the Waldorf. Spectacular but you'd pay at least double your wife's estimate. |

I see your point about how insulting the whole "giving them $50 for gas" thing is. I guess I should go back to offering him $50 to bang his wife as
at least they'll be earning the handout, huh?
As for brunch, I have no idea what it would cost, but I know what it would have cost THEM, and that's $0. But having turned down our offer to pay for their room, it would have been rude to offer up front to pay for their brunch. Knowing that they weren't willing to pay $100 a couple and having them bail on brunch is better than them feeling obligated to join us and then sharing a brunch or not getting a second mimosa because it would be too expensive. |
