My grandparents had a party line when I was a kid. I don't think I know anyone else who ever had one.

The yardman and his wife had one; it was sort of fascinating. Alas...he was not able to actually use the phone, but his wife could. When my nan lay dying in the hospital, he drove 70 miles to see her, which was the longest sojourn of his entire existence. |

Granny had one when I was growing up. The best thing about them? The operator would ask you for your number when you placed a long distance call, give them a
different number and they never questioned the number. Granny never got nailed with any of my long distance calls. I was a bad girl.
