Why Can't Old People Win? |
Lead | |
|
For the past few seasons everybody has been bitching about the lack of female winners, but in the history of Survivor there have only been two winners over the
age of 40 (Tina and Tom, and they were just barely over 40). Obviously there are fewer older people than younger people cast each season, but still,
what's up with that?

By sheer percentages, the odds of an older person getting far are extremely slim because they barely cast anyone over the age of forty. How many did we have
this year? Did we have any? (to be honest, I don't even know the ages of the fans, were Kathy, Tracy or Chet 40+?) When you have on average no more than
2-3 40+ people per season, the odds of them winning will never be that high. With 2 winners over 40, the % of winners is at least fairly close to the % of 40+
people we get on the show in the first place.

I think the only "old" person that managed to go really far and even considered a threat is Yau-Man. Bruce could have won this if he wasn't
evacuated. It's more about chance at times than age. Clay could have even won if he didn't piss his tribemates so much (The lesser of the two evils?)

Rudy only got as far as he did in Borneo due to sheer ignorance on the part of Tagi... he was the easy scape goat for their first few tribal councils but they
were just too un-organized to actually get him out and then by the time they finally had a solidified plan down, along came Hatch and that was that. With that
said, Rudy played a smart game for the rest of his time out there and could have, make that would have won if he could have kept his hand on the idol...

They get voted out early most of the time for being physical liabilities.
The few that do make it into the finals usually can't win a challenge to save their lives, and are soon booted due to the likeability threat. |

Like people have said, not a whole lot of them and they tend to get targetted early as physical liabilities.
Also, their gameplay usually consist of getting dragged along by alliance. That works wonders if you want a place in the final 4, but don't expect to win. Jake had a really good shot of winning, but made piss poor booting decisions. |

There is no way to satisfy everyone. We've had a string of male winners and finally a woman wins and everyone moves onto.."now why don't older
people win?"..next season some old bitch/fucker will win and there will be a thread about "why has no big eared, blonde haired, dwarf man win?"
there have been 16 winners..we can't cover every demographic. |

They dont even cast that many older people anymore. Look at the breakdown of 40+ year old contestants:
Borneo: Sonja, BB, Rudy (3/16) (Rich, Sue and Gretchen were all 39 at the time) Outback: Debb, Maralyn, Roger, Keith, Tina (5/16) Africa: Frank, Linda, Teresa, Carl, Kim J, Tom, Diane (7/16) Marquesas: Peter, Patricia, Paschal, Kathy (4/16) Thailand: John, Jake, Helen, Jan, Clay (5/16) Amazon: Janet, Jeanne, Roger, Butch (4/16) Pearl Islands: Trish, Andrew, Lill (3/16) All-Stars: 8/18 (although they were cast as all-stars/favorites, so I wouldnt point out the age situation here. Interesting to note that a high percentage of 40+ year olds are considered all-stars in the game....so its not like older people are mostly boring and uncompetitive.) Vanuatu: Lisa, Lea, Scout, Twila (4/18) Palau: Wanda, Willard, Caryn, Tom (4/20) Guatemala: Jim, Margaret, Gary, Lydia (4/16....technically 18) Panama: Tina, Ruth-Marie, Dan, Bruce, Terry (5/16) Cook Islands: Sekou, Cao-Boi, Jonathan (3/20) Fiji: Sylvia, Gary, Yau-Man, Cassandra (4/19...technically 20) China: Chicken, Denise (2/16) Micronesia: Yau-Man, Jonathan, Chet, Kathy, Tracy (5/20) So in the first 7 seasons, 40+ year olds were roughly 25-33% of the cast....all-stars was a big spike, and then since then, there have only been 2 casts (Panama and Micronesia) that had more than 20% of the cast at 40+. I'd say there's a pretty high number of these people that are either considered good players or highly entertaining players (or both.) It's gonna be hard (like Tracey said in the reunion) to make alliances when almost all of your tribe mates are young and view age as a weakness. Seems like if an older person does make it past the first two tribal councils they go to, then they're likely to make it pretty close or all the way to the end either because they're strong alphas or the goat. A lot of seasons had older players make it to the F3 (Rudy, Keith, Tina, Kim J, Kathy, Jan, Clay, Lill*, Scout, Twila, Tom, Terry, Cassandra) 13 out of 48 F3 contestants have been 40+......but only 2 of them were winners. Older people either make great final TC competition because everyone knows they were just brought along for the ride in their alliances, or they make terrible final TC competition because they usually play the game with integrity and have the respect of their tribes. |

Women 40+ have a double burden because younger men won't accept them as leaders. Look at Tracy and Sylvia.
Old Wanda couldn't get a younger guy to pick her, but the gut not picked in palau was a boring muscular young dude. |

Coby might have picked her if she hadn't driven everybody nuts with her singing.

And if you want to get technical, Tina was not over 40 when she won. Her season was filmed in November of 2000, and her birthday is in December, so she was 39
on the day the game ended.

Why can't old people win? | ||
|
Because this is Survivor and not a game of bingo. How many 40 year olds compete in the major leagues? Even in golf, winners over 40 are a minority. In chess,
world champions are at their best in their late 20s to mid 30s.
Most survivor winners have been fit of mind and body and survival is for the fittest. The Melindas and Leslies of this world will never win and should never win this game. Face facts. People in their 40s have to be fit and of above average intelligence to compensate for the younger players' natural advantage. 2 out of 16 is about right.

Older people have proved they can outlast, but usually fall short when seated next to younger opponents. Kim Johnson, Clay, Lill, Twila, and Cassandra show
that while middle aged winners may be rare, middle aged runner ups are not. So you have this dichotomy of the middle aged goats losing in the front of the
jury, while the old people with a shot at winning get cut at the very end: Rudy, Kathy, Jan, Scout, Terry, Yau-Man, Denise, and now Cirie (not 40 yet, but
close enough). The old goats don't win, and the old jury threats don't make it.

How many older people (especially older women) can get younger people to be loyal to them over their contemporaries?
Tina did it with Coby (bye Amber). Cirie did it with Aras (over Danielle) but couldn't do with with Amanda because Parvati was her match as a social player. |

I think you answered your own question: "old" people don't win becuase "old" people aren't casts as much. I'm sure if someone
did a statistical analysis of the amount of 20 year-ols, 30 year-olds and 40+ year-olds, they would find that 2 "old" winners correlates to the
amount of "old people that have ever been on the show.
On a more theoretical note: They are physical liabilities, and in the beginning of the game, physical strength is needed. Also, older women are usually seen as bitches or coat-tail riders, so they would have a hard time convincing a jury of why they should win. |

I'm going to go further and say older people (particularly women) aren't cast as much because chances are they won't apply. I am over 40 and even
though I love the show and think I probably could tough out the survival aspect, I don't see the point in going all that way just to be the first boot of
the season because some douchebag alliance of 20somethings decide I'm a physical liability (which compared to them, I am).

1. Few old people have been cast in every season.
2. Most old people can't take the physical challenges of staying on an island; many old players were out of the game because of injuries or exhaustion. 3. Old people are regarded as physical liabilities for their tribes before the final merge. 4. Old people can't win individual immunity to save themselves after the final merge.

Another reason: old people aren't as willing to play a very vicious game. As people get older, they place a higher value on morals and ethnics, they become
more concerned about their reputation and legacy, so they become less willing to be evil on national television.
If you look at the old players, they generally try to play a nicer game than young people do. Both older winners (Tina and Tom) won the game without being a villain. |
