As soon as Fed had his unexpected loss, the writing was on the wall re: Djoko taking this title.
Jumping from 24 to 10 is nuts! Dinara had a hell of a week in Germany, beating three Top Ten players (Henin, S. Wms., Dementieva). Elena had a funny quote after the match, doggin' Marat a little... "Dementieva, who lost out on her 10th title, has known Safina since they were children. She was coached by her mother. "Since she was little she had worked so hard," Dementieva said. "Marat has gone so far, but he
didn't work so hard." " |

...but for the MAIN reason I came to the thread this morning - talk about a bomb dropped from out of nowhere, if there's any truth to this!! I'll be
paying attention to this news conference slated for today.
Report: Henin to hang up racket, call it a career Henin, who has been in a slump all spring, called a news conference, while local newspapers already carried headlines saying "Henin quits." The 25-year-old Belgian has always said she sought a long career and despite injuries and a divorce, she had a sterling 2007 with two Grand Slam victories and eight other tour titles. However, after winning her home tournament in Antwerp in February, she has been on one of her worst skids of her career and failed to go beyond a quarterfinal since. This year she lost to Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Italy's Francesca Schiavone, and some were lopsided. Last week she was ousted from the Berlin Open in the third round and this week she pulled out of the Italian Open. Her announcement could range from withdrawing for a limited amount of time, to retiring at the end of the season or quitting all tennis immediately. "She finds it tough, losing matches she normally would not lose," Fed Cup captain Sabine Appelmans said. "But I don't think her career is over. She has to get through this and then end her career at the top of her game." Only last year in May, Belgium's Kim Clijsters, a former No. 1 player, said farewell to competitive tennis. Clijsters has since married and become a mother. Throughout her career, Henin has had to beat the odds. She had to battled the giants in the game and with a superlative one-handed backhand, amazing speed and endless determination, she won seven Grand Slam titles and an Olympic title. The only major to escape her is Wimbledon. She lost her mother to cancer when she was 12 and only reunited with her father and close family last year after almost a decade of separation. During that difficult youth, tennis gave her a sense of mission and it became all-encompassing. At the outset of her productive 2007, she also divorced from Pierre-Yves Hardenne, a Belgian to whom she had been married for four years. Henin said she had found a balance in her life between a sense of personal self-fulfillment and doggedly pursuing tennis titles. At that time, though, her tennis started to unravel. ETA: Henin's news conference is slated for 10AM Eastern time today. ETA2: Yaaaaaaayy!! I can't make a new post, until this evening - when it passes 10:23PM. Praise the magicians. She's GONE!! Officially!! I wouldn't be surprised to see her come back 2 or 3 years from now, though. Just... Wow!! The French is wide open, now! No. 1 Justine Henin retires from tennis immediately LIMELETTE, Belgium - Justine Henin retired from tennis Wednesday, an abrupt ending to a short and successful career in which she won seven Grand Slam singles titles and leaves while ranked No. 1. The 25-year-old Belgian made the surprising announcement at a news conference Wednesday, less than two weeks before the start of the French Open. She has won that clay-court major championship four times, including each of the past three years. "This is the end of a child's dream," Henin said. "This is a definitive decision. Those who know me know it is serious." Henin... won't have any sort of farewell tour. She is quitting immediately.
From what I've read, she was composed during the press conference; it was her coach Carlos who was not so. She actually has a look of contentment... perhaps relief... upon her face. Good for her!! |

I will not play in a time machine today... I will not play in a time machine today... I will not play in a time machine today...
Jeezus... first Clijsters, then Hingis (again), and now Justine, all in the last year. Women's tennis has taken a HUGE hit with the loss of those three. Smartguy (you're welcome, btw), what you're thinking of was at the Australian. I know that she's been dogged ruthlessly about that, but I don't think she retired from the match due to being a quitter when one's being hammered. From all that I've read about it, she'd been getting increasingly ill for the few days prior to the final. Here's a good, short read that gives a synopsis of what happened: Henin 'knew win was impossible' Natalie, I wouldn't count on it happening. Ana was upset yesterday by Pironkova, in Rome on clay, in her first match there... and Jelena - well, I wouldn't expect her to get past the Quarters or Semis... if she even gets that far. It'll be a tough road for them to climb. Speaking of Rome, here's a cute promotional video that Flavia and Amelie did there, in front of the Coliseum: Flavia Pennetta said: "This was a truly amazing experience. What a magical atmosphere to play tennis in. I was trying to watch the ball and instead of the beautiful surroundings. It was like being part of a movie!" Amélie Mauresmo underlined: "Although I have played all over the world, I have never played in a setting quite like this. Rome is definitely the most beautiful city in the world and I feel very fortunate that Sony Ericsson invited me to be a part of this." The draws for Roland Garros come out in 8 days.

I heard at rumor at my tennis club yesterday that it is going to come out that Henin was using steroids. And so she pre-emptively retired. Not sure if I
believe it but after the Hingis coke thing, you never know.
Read the article and I still feel she did the wrong thing. I'm sorry but even if you know you can't win - you don't quit in the finals of a major because you aren't moving well and your stomach is upset. You let Mauresmo finish and get her win and you suck it up. Unless you are risking major injury by playing on a twisted ankle, etc. you just don't quit. After what she did to Serena (hand call) and then Mauresmo - I will never have any respect for her. |

I always respected the fact that Henin was good enough to win majors, but there was always something "off" about her...so the steroids wouldn't
surprise me, especially since she's had some nagging injuries. I loved Clijsters, I was so bummed when she retired, but she did it her way.
I don't think Henin is worse than the Williams sisters though. |

While it's certainly not impossible, I don't buy into the steroid premise. I think she's just basically burnt out.
Nadal and Djoko square off in the German semi's (Fed vs. Seppi in the other) tomorrow, with a BIG implication looming... "Nadal and Djokovic will play for the No. 2 ranking. If Nadal loses, Djokovic would replace him. The Spaniard has been ranked second for a record 147 consecutive weeks." |

The draws for Roland Garros will be out in less than a day, now!! (Ugh, 4:30AM Central time.) Main draw play begins on SUNDAY, not Monday, with more matches
on that opening day occurring this year.
Re: the draw, from rolandgarros.com: "Rafa and Ana get the chauffeur treatment The draw for the men's and women's singles will take place on Friday 23 May at 11.30 am in the VIP area of Roland Garros (alongside Suzanne Lenglen court). As part of the Roland Garros stadium 80th anniversary celebrations, Rafael Nadal and Ana Ivanovic, who will be carrying out the draw, will be driven from their respective hotels to the stadium in two 1920s Hispano Suisa vehicles which date back to the founding of the complex. For the women's singles, the non-seeded players will be draw first electronically before defending men's singles champion Nadal pulls the 32 seeds out of the hat. The men's draw will then be carried out in the same way, with Ivanovic, the 2007 women's singles finalist, picking out the 32 seeds. A reminder that for the first time, the draw will be broadcast live on Eurosport France between 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. The whole draw will also be shown on www.rolandgarros.com, meaning that Internet users from around the world can follow the action." |
