Yeah. I bought it, hated it, sold it to a used CD store and then the fucking songs started growing on me and I bought it again.

IS A CHART'S BEST FRIEND
Legend's Rick Rubin-Produced Columbia Album Will Debut at #1 May 7, 2008 It's been 42 years since Neil Diamond released his debut album in 1966, The Feel of Neil Diamond. The veteran singer-songwriter proves he's still got the waist movement, Cherry, with his latest Columbia Records release, Home After Dark, produced by label creative chief Rick Rubin, set to debut at #1 next week for Steve Barnett and company with a one-week total of 125-130k. That number, which could go higher with Mother's Day weekend sales, should be more than enough to beat out Madonna's WB release, Hard Candy, which appears on tap for between 85-95k after one week on top. It'll be the first chart-topping bow for Diamond in his four-decade-long career, based on one-day reports from all those music retailers recovered enough from Cinco de Mayo festivities to return our e-mails. Diamond's last album for the label, 2005's 12 Songs, the first one produced by Rubin, saw its sales stunted by Andy Lack's rootkit fiasco, though it recovered enough to eventually go gold. RCA American Idol alum Clay Aiken is On My Own Here, with loyal Claymates pushing his first-week sales total to 80-85k, just ahead of fellow J Records heartthrob Gavin DeGraw's self-titled sophomore album with 75-80k. Other chart newcomers include Show Dog Mercury country star Toby Keith's 35 Biggest Hits, on target for 60-70k, followed by 143/Reprise pop crooner Josh Groban's live CD/DVD package at 50-55k and a greatest hits compilation from Capitol Nashville's latest Real Men of Genius subject Dierks Bentley at 30-35k. The market was up 10% over last week, down 10% vs. the same week last year and down 11% year to date, which seems to be following the trajectory of George W.'s approval rating. |

with loyal Claymates pushing his first-week sales total to 80-85k Wow, this album probably won't even hit gold status unless a miracle happens. |

I wish Phil success, but I'm not surprised he's having a tougher sell than Bucky or Kellie. They were both pure country from the first time viewers saw
them. Phil was singing pop and ballads and basically everything, then towards the end of his run, he suddenly told America how much he loved country music.
I'm sure he does love country music, but I can't think of a better way for someone to look inauthentic.

our rankings coming soon, but first let's take care of the Idol album sales news. It was a strong sales week overall, thanks to a ton of debuts (18 in the
top 50). That means a lot of chart drops for incumbent Idols, but their sales generally weren't adversely affected.
Jordin's top-ranked on the chart at No. 23, down from 20, selling 20,000, a 2% increase over last week. Total is now 717,000, as she passes Taylor. Daughtry drops 23-29, selling in the mid-17,000s, an 0.4% increase in sales, for a total of 4.02 million. Carrie's Carnival Ride drops 28-39, selling in the mid-14,000s, a 2% drop, for a total of 2.06 million. Some Hearts is down 65-75 but is up 10% in sales to the mid-9,000s, for a total of 6.40 million. Phil's self-titled album makes its debut at No. 43 with 13,000 sold out of the gate. By semi-random comparison, more-established label-mate Josh Gracin debuted at 33 with 18,000 a month ago. Bucky sold 61,000 his first week last year. Speaking of Josh, you'll now find him in the following, non-chart section, as he fell off the top 200 from No. 175 last week. Non-charting Idols: Josh sold 3,000, down from 3,700, for a total of 37,000. Kellie sold 2,500, down from 2,700, for a total of 753,000. Kelly sold 2,000 copies of Breakaway, down from 2,100, for a total of 5.99 million. My December sold 800, same as last week, for a total of 764,000. Bucky sold 1,300, same as last week, for a total of 341,000. Blake sold 1,000, same as last week, totaling 291,000. Elliott sold 900, down from 1,000, for a total of 507,000. Bo sold 800, up from 700, for a total of 50,000, and should see a boost from his Idol performance tonight in next week's numbers. Randy sold 800, same as last week, for a total of 28,000. Mandisa sold 500, down from 600, for a total of 78,000. Fantasia sold 400, up from 300, for a total of 513,000. Clay sold 300, up from 200, for a total of 525,000. Numbers on his new album next week (likewise for Chris Sligh). Katharine sold 200, same as last week, moving up to a rounded 371,000. Kimberley sold 200, down from 300, totaling 21,000. Taylor sold 100, same as last week, for a total of 702,000. Ruben sold 100, same as last week, totaling 237,000. Constantine sold 100, same as last week, for a total of 25,000. David Cook went from 600 last week to nothing recorded by SoundScan this week, as his earlier album was effectively removed. |

Jordin (717,000) should move past Bo(719,000),Josh(729,000),Kellie(753,000) in the next 2-3 weeks putting her at the #7 selling idol of all time. Fantasia will
be safe at #6 with 2,312,000 unless Jordin's sales start to skyrocket.

I'm happy for Jordin. It would be nice to see her album go platinum.
I need to focus on the classy people Idol has produced like Jordin, Kelly, Carrie among others to rid myself of the stench produced by Jason Castro last night. |

'Idol' effect works well for Natasha, Neil
The digital songs chart, based on Nielsen SoundScan data, is the fastest weekly reflector of Idol's influence on America's music-consumption patterns. This week there's yet more evidence of how an Idol appearance can (at least temporarily) boost an artist's sales fortunes. But first, the Idols themselves are topped by Jordin's No Air, which drops from No. 4 to No. 5 with 105,000 units sold, down 12%, for a total of 1.60 million. Tattoo falls 47-60, selling 19,000, also down 12%, for a total of 1.60 million again (No Air is slightly ahead when you unround the figures). Daughtry leads off with Feels Like Tonight, inching up 60-59 with a 3% sales gain to 19,000 and a total of 385,000. Home sales are off 8% to 8,000, for a total of 1.46 million; it moves 133-156 on the chart. What About Now plunges 77-189, selling 7,000, a 55% drop, for a total of 236,000. Carrie's top download tune is All-American Girl, but it's down 53-69 with sales in the mid-17,000s, down 13%. Total is 487,000. Last Name is up 108-91, selling in the mid-13,000s, a 30% gain, for a total of 77,000. Before He Cheats falls 103-119, selling in the mid-9,000s, a 12% drop, for a total of 2.31 million. And Josh's We Weren't Crazy slips 98-105, selling in the mid-10,000s, a 10% drop, for a total of 68,000. OK, now for the show effects portion of our program. Natasha Bedingfield's Pocketful of Sunshine, the song she performed, vaults 11-4, selling 135,000, a 110% boost. Total is 636,000, for context. But that's not all. Her earlier single, Love Like This, rebounds 94-79 with 16,000 sold, a 23% jump. And her even earlier single, Unwritten, reappears on the chart at 102 with 11,000 sold. Meanwhile, the latest album, also called Pocketful of Sunshine, leaps 97-24, selling 19,000, a 199% increase. Mentor Neil Diamond won't have figures for his new album until next week. But three of his songs performed by the Idols jumped onto the chart. Sweet Caroline (David A.) comes in at 48 with 23,000 sold. America (also David A.) is No. 106 with 11,000. And I Am...I Said (Brooke) sold 10,000 to enter the list at 108. Meanwhile Iz's Over the Rainbow is still hanging in there weeks after Jason's performance, down 67-81 with 16,000 units sold. And lest we forget, Paula's Dance Like There's No Tomorrow is down 173-174, but enjoys a mysterious 3% increase in sales to nearly 8,000 for a total of 288,000. Maybe she should make a spectacle of herself more often. |
