David.....*ten second pause*....well.....I really don't care if your dad hides my drugs or not anymore. It wasn't your best performance, but who cares? You look beautiful tonight!

Overall, I like the current system better. The groups were NEVER fair or even, and talented people missed out by being in a group that was overpacked with
talent, while extremely mediocre people made it in because there wasn't much competition in their group. And I don't trust the judges to even pick the
best of the rest to COMPETE on the wildcard show...
The one change I'd like to see happen would be to have the top 24 sing for three weeks with voting but no eliminations. Then, at the end of three weeks the top 12 vote getters make the finals and the other 12 go home. That would prevent a situation where somebody really good but who just got no screen time in the audition shows gets overlooked in the first week. Personally, I see no need to divide it into boys and girls, either. Mix up the performance order and gender distribution randomly over two nights for each of those three weeks, and let the chips fall where they may. I'd rather see the best 12 people, regardless of their gender... |

Contestants just don't really feel the urgency of having to perform their best anymore. Not only that, having the competition be drawn out the way it is now makes it stale and repetitive in the long run. There isn't the excitement of meeting a bunch of new people every week and then seeing the best 12 together for the first time come the finals. Also, the new format makes it more obvious that it's all just a popularity contest, letting the favorites just build up their fanbases during the semi's. if you ask me they should adapt Australian idol's format of having a top 24 divided, by gender in 4 groups of 6 followed by a wildcard round. all the excitement of the earlier seasons with the gender quota of today. |

The current semifinal format is much better. Good singers were getting lost too easily before, and bad ones got thru on sob stories that would now result in
them being dumped around the second week of the semis (i.e. Jim Verraros). Also, since the judges and/or Nigel were so flaky about their wildcard choices, bad
singers made it into the finals because of one fluke decent performance at the right time (i.e. Jon Peter Lewis). And rigging the contest to even out the
male/female ratio was blatant. The wild card round in season 2 had seven females and two males.
About the only good thing about the old format was that it didn't ENSURE an even male-female ratio. This came in very handy in the third season. The male "talent" that year was so close to nonexistant that the mind boggles at what 6 males in the group would have done. Besides the 3 awful guys who DID make the finals (George Huff was fine) we would have been subjected to the likes of people like Erskine Walcott or John Preator. It's possible we would have started the finals with 3 or 4 weeks of all-male bottom 3's, which admitttedly is quite a change from what's happened this season. The season 3 wildcard also had an even crazier problem, which my second Simon quote to Nigel will address: "Nigel, If you get rid of four people tonight before they can even sing I will walk off the show. We selected each of them for the wildcard round together. This is too sadistic even for me. If they are terrible they will not make the finals. I'm not compromising on this." |

Agreed. The S3 wildcard was absolute insanity. I bet they got so many complaints that they were pretty much forced to change the semifinal format.
Why do we even need semifinals anyway? Couldn't they just cut the crap and whittle the singers down to 12 in the chair round? |

When Brooke messed up, she should have gotten voted off. That was fixed, big time. Its all a popularity contest. However, David Archuleta has the talent and
cuteness, so he should win<3
