I've always wanted to go back and "redo" parts of Hawaii, and I'm just about to the point where I am able to do it. The main problems I have always wanted to fix are:

1. The style of the first few episodes is completely different from the rest of the story (as well as all my other stories). When I originally started Hawaii, it was written exactly like Burnett's book. It was basically just a narrative that described the events that happened (ie, First they did this. Then they did this. Then x was voted off). There was absolutely zero dialogue in the first episode, and that was a fact I always hated. It's way too dry, there's no heart behind it, and it's just not very interesting to read. And as a writer who always prided himself on writing good character dialogue, I always meant to go back and redo those first four episodes.


2. All-Star Hawaii was basically a group project for the first six episodes. It wasn't just my story. So even though the All-Star stories became known as "Mario's stories" that wasn't the case back when we started. I actually had little control over how the story developed, which is why some of the plotlines just start and then peter out with no resolution. It wasn't until I started taking more of an editor role (around episode six) that the story really started to tighten up and flow like it should. So that's something I always wanted to fix.


3. Because it wasn't "my" story yet, there are a few story arcs that I have always wanted to just kill and get rid of in the first few episodes. There's a fight between Lex and Sue over a machete in episode four that I have always hated. It makes no sense, it's not in character at all, and all the readers called me on it back when the story first came out. Since I never wrote that storyline (and hated it at the time, too), now I can just get rid of it and put something else there that would make more sense.



4. Lots of people said the finale sucked, and that they didn't agree with the eventual winner. Well I'm not going to change the ending, but I am going to rework the finale to explain why the person who won ended up doing so. There's a lot I had to meant to do with the finale, but never had time because my son was born the very next day after it posted (July 31, 2002). That whole finale was very rushed, and I think it shows. And it is something I have always wanted to remedy if I ever had a chance to do so.




There are a few other reasons too but those are the main ones. This is something I've been wanting to do for a very very very long time.
