We devote this thread to try and pick the winner (hopefully by or before the merge) by looking at the editing player by player and applying logic from past editing patterns or observations about what we have been shown. Everyone is welcome to participate, so for anyone new who wants to jump on board here is generally how it goes: After watching each episode posters rate the players: Step 1: Ratings: OTT, CP, MOR, UTR and INV OTT (over the top) CP (complex personality) MOR (middle of the road) UTR (under the radar) INV (Invisible) Step 2: Tone: NN, N, nothing, P, PP (Rate players from Really Negative to Really Positive) Step 3: Visibility: 1-5 (From 1 or low visibility to 5 or high visibility) Below in Warriors posts are the more detailed comprehensive guidelines we use, and some charts that will come in handy for analysis. Following that there should be some threads from different watchdogs (WDs) with analysis of the season as it goes for their area of responsibility which might also include detailed analysis on each Survivor as the season goes on. Also, old Edgic threads are in the "Survivor Attic", if you would like to read-up on past seasons (note - not all seasons were saved!) This thead has always been flame-free and we also strive to keep it spoiler-free. That should not change for this season. New posters are welcomed and encouraged. Posts: 2615 (01/26/06 2:06 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Edgic Guidelines Observations (In new order) 1) The winner may have ups and downs, but is typically not too UTR/INV or too OTT. 2) The winner will typically have a fair amount of meaningful editing and typically wont be ignored in long stretches. 3) Typically the winner is not overly Positive or Negative. 4) The winner is very unlikely to receive an INV rating during the course of the season, and will likely receive at least a 2 visibility in Episode 1. 5) Over the course of the game the winner's presence and visibility should end up closer to the average of all the players. (The winner typically gravitates to near the top in MOR differential, which calculates the closeness to average in presence, tone and ratings). 6) Typically the winner is surrounded by players who keep our focus to distract us from the winner. These players are often OTT and much of the complexity and strategy centers in this core group. This core group can be a combination of members of more than one complex group, rather than all being from one, original tribe. .....old 5) The tribe (or the core group that will surround a surprise winner) that has the most complex dynamics and strategy usually contains the winner. .....old 6) Typically the winner is surrounded by the player/s receiving the distracting edit. 7) The winner will have substantial comments/insight from many of the jury members that may resurface in front of the jury or mislead the audience on voting. 8) The ending is typically set up to be a somewhat of a 'surprise'. You either don't expect the winner or second place to be there. These two are often manipulated in the editing to make each look like they have a chance to win. 9) If two people are a 'known final pair' then the likelihood of them actually being the final two is slim. It would need to be a situation that cannot be avoided (i.e. Amber/Rob) Complex tribe: 1) Complex tribe has nothing to do with strategy -the average person doesn't care. It has to do with dangling, loose ends -anxious for us to revisit. 2) Complex tribe gets the most focus pre-merge. 3) In theory, the reason the tribe seems complex, is because the focus may be surrounding the winner or final core players. Ratings INV - Invisible 1) Irrelevant, no confessionals or tribal council questions in the early episodes, little or no confessionals or tribal council questions in the mid to late episodes. 2) The player's editing was insignificant to any character development. UTR - Under the radar 1) UTR means a character that is either underutilized or deliberately hidden (the trick is figuring out which). In story terms, they are kept out of focus. An UTR edit means the player may be seen, but they aren't seen doing or saying anything of major significance. Since showcasing players who do nothing isn't very entertaining, UTR edits do tend toward low visibility, but that needn't be the case. 2) Players who receive significant face time, but little to no speaking time. 3) The UTR Edit within an episode will typically be void of direct conflicts and character insight. 4) If the player gets some significant screen time, but doesn't do anything special, then you rate it UTR. MOR - Middle of the road 1) MOR means something between UTR, CP, and OTT. They say and do enough to avoid UTR, but they're not emphasized caricatures or developed personalities. This is a holding episode for characters who could be CP, but the story didn't particularly involve them, or for normally UTR characters who couldn't escape inclusion in the story. As such, winners are often portrayed as MOR at some point in the story. However, a consistently MOR edit is not a good thing because these characters are more just kind of there. 2) Someone who gets an odd positive and negative mix, but not in an Over the Top manner. 3) If the player did something that you feel makes them better that UTR, but not enough to qualify for CP, then you rate MOR. 4) MOR can be used to describe characters who were mostly UTR with a fair amount of CP. CP - Complex personality 1) CP means a character that is well-developed. Their editing has depth to it, and their choices are presented to the audience so that we get an insight into their thinking. We generally see their strengths and flaws. Not too surprisingly, these are the major players in the course of the game, and it is their choices that shape the story. 2) CP shows complexity of thought about the game, and or complex emotions that might be construed as Positive or Negative. "Players" like Brian, Shii Ann, Jeff Varner, or Chris, during the normal course of their editing, would in my mind be complex because they were always in the game. and many of their edits related directly to the strategic maneuvering in their tribe (successful or not). 3) Someone who expresses internal conflict over a situation, someone who expresses a "deep" or turbulent emotion like remorse, loneliness, or betrayal expressed intelligently and not like "You're a liar, T!;" someone who demonstrates a complex strategy or bold strategic move and their reasoning for it. There has to be something shown in interviews that contradicts what we've seen or adds conflict to the scenario. 4) If the player gets quality screen time and is either shown multiple times being strategic or shows a multi-dimensional side, then you go with CP. OTT - Over the top 1) OTT means a character that is being characterized or simplified. In story terms, they are the villains and heroes, the ones we love to love or hate. A consistently OTT character is presented as a distraction to the other players. Of course, not all OTT players stay that way, and often an OTT player will go UTR for awhile if the editors want to bring them back to the main storyline as a more well-rounded character. Contrasting OTT edits in the same player (OTTN v. OTTP) generally mean a more complex edit over the course of the show. 2) OTT players are generally always edited in a Positive or Negative light. 3) A mixture of positive and negative editing ends up being neutral overall. 4) Usually lacking in strategy, or strategy not expressed with much internal conflict - but they can have lots and lots of conflict with other people; no remorse if N and no "evil" strategizing if P - only focusing on loyalty or saving one's own skin Tone PP) Extremely positive. P) Positive. No rating - neutral) Neutral or is being edited in a positive and negative light. N) Negative. NN) Extremely negative. Visibility Measures the amount of presence that a player had in an episode. Visibility includes confessionals, speaking time, face time, second person visibility and tribal council questions (TCQ). 1) Low visibility. 2) Medium low visibility. 3) Average visibility. 4) Medium high visibility. 5) High visibility. Second Person Visbility (SPV) Second person visibility is a count of the number of times a contestant is talked about by other contestants (either in confessionals or during game play footage) in a significant context. It excludes simple lists of contestants names (e.g. Katie saying that her, Janu, Ian and Wanda will vote for Coby) or simple descriptive passages (e.g. Caryn saying that Jeff looked funny riding a horse). Revision: Many contributors to Edgic have noticed that there are differences among the SPVs shown that we believe might be materially significant to the overall edit. Because of this, the classification of SPVs for Survivor 12 will go beyond a basic tally of number of SPVs and will analyze the nature of each SPV. These are all tallies for the individual that is spoken about the second person. SPV Tone: Positive, Negative or Neutral. Regardless of whether the SPV is accurate or not, the general tone of the SPV content is noted. SPV Type: I) (inconsequential); General in nature, without significant substance or tone. Example: John and I went to get the tree mail. This is a difference in SPV analysis; for S12 all mentions of another person will be tallied. They may be as previously believed irrelevant. But they are SPVs, so they will be tallied. S) (Strategic) The content discusses the strategy of the second person (NOT of the speaker. This will be included in the speakers rating, not in an SPV rating.) G) (General) The content is of a general nature, more than inconsequential but not strategic. Example: discussions of injuries. I liken this to the standard MOR Edgic rating. R) (Reinforced) The content of the SPV is reinforced by images of the second person acting in a way described in the SPV. Example: John is really lazy, followed by images of John sleeping and lying about when others are working. C) (Contradicted). The content of the SPV is contradicted by images of the second person acting in a way contrary to the SPV. Example: John is really lazy, followed by images of John working very hard. This SPV, which doesnt occur often, has so far without exception been used as a strong negative indicator against the speaker rather than the second person. Not all SPVs will have an R or C. In fact, most wont. Game Strategy Ratings S0 - Nothing Strategic. Either the player is not present in the episode (INV) or his comments are always narration about camp life, not strategy. S1 - Somebody in the background during strategy sessions, or shown making one short confessional about his boot decision. Could even be shown taking a minor role talking about strategy but with no confessionals about strategy. S2 - Somebody who is shown in multiple strategy sessions, or talking with different people, or rallying to boot somebody, etc. - but isn't all over the place when it comes to strategy. S3 - These are the people who dominate the strategy talk. The greatest example of S3 for me is Brian C. in the "bait Blake" episode. Every time Brian is shown, he is being strategic, explaining the game from his point of view, we know what his plan is and how's he going to make it work. Every strategic thing is shown through his eyes. Usually an S3 person will be shown strategizing almost all the time they're on screen. Posting Schedule Thursday - Episode airs and all posters begin posting ratings. Monday (Noon) - All ratings are due. Monday (by 6) - Episode Tally is posted with close calls listed. (any rating where there is not at least 55% agreement), discussion on close calls begins. Wednesday (by Noon) - Discussion on close calls ends. Wednesday (by 6) - After considering discussion, Category Watchdogs and Player Watchdogs make the final call. If they disagree pastordice will have the final say. When the vote fails to reach a 55% majority the player WD and Category WD will each choose the rating they feel best represents the edit from any rating consisting of more than 20% of the vote. If they disagree, the overseer will choose the rating he/she feels is best between the two WD ratings or any other rating that consists of more than 33% of the vote. So many times we all give our ratings, chaperone tallies and Warrior charts them. Your job will be to give it that second look and send up a flare if something looks odd. Everyone will be rating ALL the players as normal. If people want to make a special effort with their 'watchdog' player, that will be cool too. The main thing is to just keep an eye on final ratings each week so that 'your' player is not being falsely rated. This data is being counted to test the theory that the winner has a relatively high SPV count (postulated by KQ based on his observation of JennaM in S6). This data is being counted and categorized by ScepticA, see his post below. S-9 S-10 S-11 S-12 Voting Results: Accumulative Average Differential Graphs: The following analysis is examining a theory that, in the long term, a contestant that is close to the average for Rating, Tone, and Visibility is a leading candidate to win Survivor. Methodology In each episode, a contestants Edgic score for Rating, Tone and Visibility were converted to a number, using pastordices conversion scale for letter rankings. (Posted each week in chaperone's tallies) The contestants score, for each category, is the difference between mean and the contestants episode average score. Example: Terrys visibility for episode 1 was 2.29 the difference from mean (3) would be -.71 and that would be his score for episode 1. The scores were calculated week by week, and then the cumulative scores determined by add them episode by episode. Example: If Terrys visibility scores for the first 4 episodes are -.71, +.71, +.50 and +.75 then his cumulative score would be +1.25. In the past these numbers were derived at using the mean of squared differences. I feel that for the Tone and Visibility the true mean is more accurate and for the ratings I dont think it matters. The mean for Ratings, Tone and Visibility are 3,0 and 3 respectfully. There is a strong feeling that in the editing of Survivor, Probst is always right. So what he said, in game and afterward, may help glean the direction the castaways are heading. This post also gives extended analysis of each episodes Tribal Council, which will tie in to each castaways discussion through the Edgic thread. Terry dropped from double-digits for two weeks to one totally insignificant SPV ("is that Terry in the boat?") Aras: 4 2Sneut, 2Gneut. Managed to keep out of the fray. He had more "looking over the tribe" looks than the rest of the season combined for him. Bruce: 16 7Gneut 9GP. Could have been more. The salute from Terry to him was longer than I recall the first time, and was the only one after Jeff's announcement. Cirie: 6 2 Sneut, 1SN, 2GN, 1Gneut. One long rant by Shane about her and Danielle was counted as one SPV, although he mentioned her several times in it. Courtney: 7 2Gneut (including JP's call to her down the beach) 4 GN (including 2 GNReinforced and a big fat GNContradicted from Shane) 1 GP Danielle: 5 1GP 1 Gneut, 3 SN. The negs were all from Shane. It was hard do distinguish between a Neg and neutral in some of those, but I based them on Shane's tone of voice. Shane: 8 1Gneut 3 GN, 4SN. Almost entirely negative. One of them (Aras') was reinforced - about him looking like a wild man. Frankly, a lot of them could have been reinforced, like Danielle's "haven't you ever played sports?" Terry 1 Gneut. Totally out of the picture. ---- The SPVs from Shane and about Shane confirmed to be he was NN. The edit when Bruce was boatlifted to the hospital was telling for both Courtney's basic edit and Shane's. Courtney hovered near Bruce, trying to comfort (and failing). She was basically oblivious to the fact she was annoying (one of the key elements of this ep wasn't that she was annoying and talked too much, but rather than she was totally unaware of it. Shane only said "We need you" to him, and commented about his lack of pants, and asked if they had to lift the stretcher right then. In addition, Shane was seen far away from Bruce at the fire for most of that event. Shane did have a good post-departure SPV about him not wanting Bruce to leave that way. Terry's edit was more P than I recall. He never sulked, and in fact his demeanor of coolly observing the proceedings matched closely the edit of Aras.

They can also list anything the strategy watchdogs feel is noteworthy. Ep#1 notes -Shane was a debatable S2. -Danielle was shown volunteering to stay behind on exile island after losing the RC, but not in a strategic way (before they even knew about the hidden immunity idol). It was debated to give her an S1 but decided against. -According to Dalton Ross, Courtney also volunteered to stay behind on exile island but the women turned her down to (before they even knew about the hidden immunity idol). -Cirie is a + and - mix that comes out as neutral in the end. + for being shown as the obvious boot choice, but saving herself, - for voting out Tina which the editing showed as a mistake. Ep#2 notes -Nick, Sally, Melinda, and Cirie were all debatable S2. -Terry, Courtney, and Austin are a debatable S1. -Courtney got a + because she talked about Aras and Shane's stupidity in revealing their alliance and telling Cirie/Melinda they were going home. -Bruce was sent to exile island and talked about trying to find the immunity idol, but not in a strategic way. It was just reporting, first he read the newest clue (which they had to show), then he just said "I'm going to start a fire then I'll go look for that immunity idol". Ep#3 notes -Aras/Courtney were really debatable S1's from some of the stuff they said, but it was just reporting. -Cirie/Ruth Marie got weak S1's by making some strategic comments, you could debate they should have an S0 for those comments being reporting instead (like Aras/Courtney's were). Ruth Marie's S1 was for awareness of being in danger expressed at TC, Cirie's was for her confessional about the Casaya 4 alliance. -Shane is a - for being shown causing some tension in his alliance with his behavior at camp. He earned the S1 with his mention of being trapped in his alliance from swearing on his son's life. -Misty is a debatable neutral, since she was called smart by others (Sally/Terry), but then got voted out despite that (and partially because the men thought she was weak at the challenges). Ep#4 notes -Sally's + was debated a bit from us not seeing her do much at camp to save herself, but she still saved herself -Terry would have earned a + from SPV and being shown as the good leader of La Mina that the tribe is clueless without, but then we were met to half wonder if the men alliance had made a mistake in voting out Ruth Marie. -Cirie gets a late addition + for how so many viewers think she's a great player, and how she's shown getting closer to the Casaya 4 alliance, we're supposed to think she's a good player now. Ep#5 notes -Aras could have possibly gotten a + after the talk about him setting himself up to be so powerful in the merge, but he lost it when he lost Bobby. Having Bobby around was part of how he was setting himself up. Danielle was shown taking control away from him. -Danielle gets a + for being shown taking control of the game and controlling the vote at TC. -Bobby & Bruce get a - for being called out as bad players who don't want to be part of their tribe by Jeff. -Dan & Sally's strategy talk consisted entirely of talking about the last TC in confessionals. -A bit of talk that Terry should get an S1 for his EI scene where he worries about his tribe not feed themselves properly or staying hydrated. It's his same strategy to get everyone to the merge that he's mentioned before. Ep#6 notes -Shane is a debatable S1. -There was some debate over Danielle being an S2. -The editors are making an effort to not give Terry a -, while still eventually explaining how he makes some mistakes that probably cause him to lose. Read some interviews with Dan to learn some of the stuff they cut out that could make Terry look stupider. -We're still supposed to think that Cirie is the best player on Casaya. -Aras gets a + for his talk with Shane where he tells him how poorly Shane went about ending the alliance in a way that hurt himself. We see that Aras wouldn't have been dumb enough to shot himself in the foot like that. -It was debated that Sally's strategy talk was just reporting and narrating (to remind us that she's on the outside of the boy's alliance and was saved by getting exiled). Ep#7 notes -Aras & Shane earn a + for being shown getting Bruce to stay with Casaya. Shane loses his + from being shown making the La Minas mad with his open strategy meeting and getting targeted from that. -Even though Danielle was INV this episode she got an S1 because she was shown as a player every time she was on screen. She strategized about as much as Courtney this episode. -Some people disagreed with Austin deserving a - on page 131. Austin got a - for revealing his strategy of playing weak at TC, which leaves the average viewer thinking he just ruining his entire strategy of appearing weaker then he really was by telling it to everyone. That would mean he's stronger then he showed at the IC. -Terry was a debatable -, the argument for neutral is the editors tried to show him as desperate with his offer to Cirie/Shane (Shane even called him desperate) rather then stupid. -Sally was shown saying pretty much exactly the same strategic comments as last episode, all stuff you'd expect someone in her situation to say since they have to be shown on Exile island (being saved by getting sent there, and looking for the idol). This is why she got an S0 (just like why Terry got an S0 his second time on EI, and Bruce both times). Ep#8 notes -We debated -'s for Sally & Bruce for the "I'm so full" scene making Cirie mad at them, but decided against it. -There was a bit of discussion for giving Terry an S3+, but he barely earned it, it was much more Shane's stupidity in blurting out his F4 then Terry as a good player, and giving him a + could scew him to be shown as a better player then he's portrayed as. -Austin & Sally are debatable S2's. -Courtney has quite a difficult and dynamic edit to determine for if she's a + or - (one of us leaned - the other leaned + at the begining, she got neutral). On one hand she was shown as being wrong in her argument with Aras when she said Terry didn't have the hidden immunity idol, and wouldn't give it away (when we were supposed to think he might). But on the other hand she explained why she wouldn't be concerned about Aras going home from the hidden immunity idol, they showed us how Courtney wouldn't be hurt at all if Aras went from it, how it might actually help her since she thought Aras was a threat that had to go eventually. -Aras gets a + for being aware of how the hidden immunity idol could screw him over and attempting to get his alliance to vote out Sally who Terry wouldn't have given the hidden immunity idol to. Ep#9 notes -Sally and Courtney are kind of debatable S1's. -Cirie was considered for an S2. -Aras may have deserved a really weak +. -Terry was kind of in the debatable S3/S2 area. Ep#10 notes -Shane is a - for how we're supposed to think he's a moron and easy to manipulate with the scene of Aras/Cirie patching things up with him, leaving Shane thinking he subconsciously controls their alliance. Ep#11 notes -Danielle was shown as indecisive, and Cirie called her easy to brainwash and manipulate. Ep#12 notes -Terry was shown as a bad social player. Ep2 - Terry, I skewed Positive but some felt static was appropriate. Ep3 - Cirie had some P support but I felt static was appropriate, Aras I didn't agree with skewing P but Edgicers did, I felt Courtney was deserving of an N. Ep4 - Cirie I would've said neutral P and Shane N, but they skewed correctly. I didn't see the strong P for Aras and Sally but agree with them. Tough call on Austin. Ep5 - I gave Danielle a Dynamic Positive rating and questioned Cirie getting a full P again. Agree wholly with Aras getting a Dynamic Balanced ranking. Some felt Sally was worthy of a Balanced Tone, and it was a close call for me. Ep6 - I thought Cirie and Shane both were Neutral Balanced instead of deserving a full Tone and was surprised at the few N votes for Courtney. His very strategic edit is noted in the strategy charts, in which he's shown as the most consistent and active strategizer over the first two episodes, but isn't enough to warrant CP. I had one of three ratings for Courtney at some point - MOR, CP, OTT. Let's take a closer look. First, there was the manipulated wink with Aras before the RC. Final 2? Romber Version 2.0? Who knows? Then we had the scene at the younger women's camp, which can be divided into two acts - the search for a campsite, with Courtney's "being indecisive women" confessional, and the discovery of the dead turtle, Courtney's big scene this episode. Drawing a heart around the turtle, the turtle represents Mother Earth (Goddess), let's roll the turtle back into the water at high tide; this scene illustrated some of Courtney's thought processes and New Age ideas and I didn't find it particularily negative until both Sally ("I'm not into symbolism") and Danielle ("Courtney needlessly over-dramatizes things") gave negative SPV confessionals. Overall, Courtney seems like a pretty positive character, with self-deprecating confessionals and her ever-present smile. I feel that Courtney's positive demeanor cancels out her negative SPV from her tribemates to end up with a "dynamic neutral" (thanks OTH) tone rating. Now, what about her "main" rating - MOR, CP or OTT? Hmmmmm. MOR would be a "default" rating, if we can't settle on CP or OTT. I feel that there was OTTness in her "dead turtle" scene, but we also got some information on how she thinks, which is CPish. I finally settled on CP3, although I wouldn't be too upset if she ended up being OTT3 - it's that close. Episode Two --- CP4 Courtney was part of the papaya gathering/eating scene at the YW camp. During the pick 'em, after being selected by Shane, she selected Aras ("red shirt"). Remember the manipulated wink? Remember the New Age spirituality? Remember the Alamo? Oops, sorry, got a little off track there. Courtney did very well in the challenges. She was chosen, or volunteered, to be the snake-carrier in the RC. When Bobby and Shane floundered in the IC, Courtney jumped right in the water and helped Aras pull the boat and anchor box ashore. When Casaya got back to their camp, Courtney was the fire cheerleader. "I like our team name." "I like our team colour". "I like our team members". Around this time, she also got some negative SPV from Cirie, complaining about her valley girl mannerisms (like, like, like). Courtney was part of the discussion with D/S (later joined by A) when setting up the four-person alliance. When Shane announced to D/C that he wanted to quit, she had several comments and confessionals criticising Shane. "what are you doin', lettin' us down", "we need you, pick it up, man", "Shane snapped, and is throwing in the towel". Later Courtney had some strong comments about Aras' announcement to C/M. "Aras acted alone, and he dropped a huge bomb". She was also pissed at Shane for revealing the alliance of four to the others. At TC, Courtney had no TCQs, but did have some camera shots (probably manipulated) to comments by Shane and Cirie.
