Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. What I meant is that people, long long ago, actually believed in the theory of Divine Right thereby validating a monarchs position. I couldn't find any exact figures, but all of the websites I looked at agreed that part of the reason the monarchy is still around is because the 'Royals' bring in more money in tourism than they cost to maintain.

Good post, Eric, but I disagree with you slightly.

Look, it is my belief that through the good times and bad the monarchy still stands. I think all the hooha about the monarchy is foolish. The amount of money spent on this BS helps keep Britain in continuous turmoil. If they truly loved their people, the aristocracy would abolish ITSELF, return the lands and moneys to the people, and allow a true constitutional democracy to run things. I know, I know...the history, the pageantry, the endless bullshit...have a parade once a month with an animatronic Queen. That would appease the pensioners need to fawn over the monarchy.
