As someone who has read the books and is a fan of the movies, they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Stephen King wrote an essay in this week's Entertainment Weekly though where he said if you put Sauron and Darth Vader in a battle against each other, though (of course this is based on the book's details of how evil Sauron is), Darth would be p*whipped in about 30 seconds. Yeah, I had to force myself to read the Hobbit. The first chapter was hilarious with all the dwarfs bugging Bilbo, but then no female characters just a bunch of male characters walking around through the rest of the book. So I haven't read LOTR. Watching the movies all I could think of is um... that is not Middle Earth... it's just home. (New Zealand)
