According to their IGN.com interviews Bob was not a recruit--he filled out the applications and sent in a video. Sugar was a recruit (she had applied for some other show), but she watched about 6 seasons to prepare. I have respect for that.

Matty: I really didn't have a strategy. I had never viewed the show. I was approached in a supermarket. The head lady for Survivor approached me and my girlfriend and my best friend and asked if I'd ever thought about being on the show. A month later I was on the show. So I really didn't have a strategy going in because I never really viewed the show prior.
