Ways to do a variety special in 21st Century:

1) Don't make it campy. Mainstream America doesn't like camp.

2) Tie Oprah into it. Either as a host or just an "Oprah Presents...." thrown on the front of it

3) Don't make it hip. Have it appeal either to fans of High School Musical, or Sarah McLachlan.

4) Make it interactive. Give things away to callers. Have them...

yeah, the show was pretty much a disaster. it mighta worked on a "Rosie cruise", (I've been on 3. loooong story, best summed up by 3 words... all expenses paid) but NOT in prime-time.

my otherwise completely sane sister's a H U G E fan, and Rosie's actually pretty gracious on the cruises, but I completely understand why people hate her so.

but... she's working on bettering herself.

IMO, she'll be near-universally loved again one...

I accidentally tuned into some of this while I was looking for something to watch. The portion I saw had Rosie and Liza doing a song together. It was horrendous. Rosie thinks she can sing, but she really can't. And she had her hair all curled and she looked like Vivian Vance from the I Love Lucy show. To top things off, she had some kids with no tap experience do a tap dance with her. She made them look really, really good.
