The posters who are saying that 5 years is enough time to get ove ra dead dog, obviously never had a pet they loved.

My cat is gonna turn 17 in a few months and I can't imagine my live with out him.

As a dog trainer, I realized that people who love dogs cannot possibly be evil people. By "evil people" I mean, con artists, sociopaths, basically anyone who uses others to get what they want without showing the slightest shread of remorse. Because taking care of a dog requires empathy and thinking outside of yourself.

That being said, dog lovers can be total jerks like anyone else.

My dog is 11-years-old, and I've had her since she was a puppy. I'll be devasted when she passes, but let's get real. I'd be more sad if one of the many friends I've met in college, who I've only known four years, passed away. People aren't as loyal as dogs, and even friends suck sometimes, but not having relationships with people makes you... well, crazy.
