Every year I call and tell them to cancel both cards unless they credit back the annual fee. It works. Mine is free and I just use it to accumulate points. We use it to pay for EVERYTHING! Well, at least everywhere where they take AmEx, which is almost everywhere. This includes our electric bill, our gym membership, phone bill, and cable bill.

Our average monthly AmEx bill is around $3,500.

We currently have points in excess of 100,000. We've used points to take a trip, buy a navigation system, and gift cards for Christmas shopping.

AmEx is the best card in the universe.

They totally go to bat for me.

They took my word over my hotel's in Madrid last year, and credited me for 1/2 the bill, against the hotel's wishes. That saved me several hundred dollars.

They gave me a $100 credit when Apple lowered the price on my iPhone 3 months after its introduction (Apple gave me another $100 via store credit).
