Unfortunately - I'm in University now. So I too am going back to school, but I am also Canookian - so I start the day after labour day, which is a fucking TUESDAY this year.

It's gotta be a southern thing. When I grew up in Illinois, we had the Labor Day-Memorial Day deal, a week from Christmas to New Years and a week at Easter. Now the teachers got a zillion "work days" and the kids have longer breaks at the holidays.

I think they should go all year long.

My kid started August 13. She has to leave the house by 7:15 to get a parking spot. The school has one lot blocked off due to the new stadium they're building. It's a mess trying to get in or out.
We can't get decent books, but the football team will have artificial turf to play a game on.

My kid is riding the bus for the first time to school. His elementary school was less than a mile from our house. Now he gets to wake up at 5:00 am to catch the bus at 6:00 am to be to school by 6:45 am. I would be bitchin' if it wasn't such an awesome school.

Schools start here day after Labor Day. Teachers have to report back Thursday & Friday before. Lot's of pissed teachers starting school year is BAD!
I was in Target for school supplies today. They had Mead 5 Star Notebooks for $1. I wanted to buy 20 of them. They had none. Fuckers wouldn't give me a rain check they said it was a "seasonal" item.
