We need to pile up the meat before winter arrives.

butchering cows is also really fun. i remember going to the butcher house when i was a kid and seeing the cows hanging like them deer up there and seeing all the blood gushing out all over the floor. it was really gory yet very interesting.

I don't know if you're still looking for an answer after all these knowing biologists and ecologist have already weighed in here, but I'm undeterred and will answer you.

Hunting season in most species coincides with their pre-mating season. It's the easiest way to cull a herd without killing pregnant or too small animals, since they've had a chance to grow to adulthood from the previous season's calving.

The meat is more tender and full in the winter as their coats thicken. So the meat tastes better. In the spring/summer they have lighter coats and the meat is not as good. Cant wait to bag a few this fall.

Is it because hunters want antlers, or because it's easier to shoot them during the rut?
