I really liked Rosetta Stone. I did level 1 Dutch, and tried level 1 & 2 Arabic. Dutch was pretty easy, but I ended up giving up on Arabic since it was a little too different from English for me to really grasp. I should probably give it another shot. Unless you are planning on using the language though, you'll forget most of it fairly quickly. It builds on top of itself, and really does allow you to understand fairly complex uses of the language. i just wrote a really long post that got deleted - so am going to keep this short
RS - good for vocab, visual learning but poor for actually being able to use the language in real conversation
Many alternatives online with more flexibility - especially educational podcasts
I listen to economist, ted talks etc...are great
For Spanish, i use SpanishPod (http://spanishpod.com) which is one of the best for this language

FWIW, I did the Rosetta Stone Swahili - Level One about 5 years ago, and found it to be a great introduction to the language. Considering the expense, I decided not to go for Level Two.

But I was also using Teach Yourself Swahili at the same time to learn grammar and sentence structure.

Rosetta Stone was by far the most expensive basic level at about $99 and the next level would have cost at least that much again. Teach Yourself (book/cd combo) was more...

I really like the Michel Thomas series. His pronunciation is meh, but I learned more using his courses than I did in 4.5 years of classroom French. Great and easy way to get comfortable in the language. Do the Foundation, Advanced and Vocabulary Builders. This is all audio, but they come with little booklets that list what's covered in each section. This will get you comfortable trying to speak the language, but you need more to be able to understand others when they are speaking to...

I got them on torrents a couple of years ago, started the French one and lost interest after a couple of levels. I think chien means dog.

The public library I used to work at had Rosetta Stone language kits, and they were very popular.

The good thing about getting them at the library is that you can try them for free for three weeks and decide if they're worth buying.

The bad part is you might not be able to renew them, and your foreign language vocabulary will be truncated somewhere in the C's or D's.

I have created a form of sign language to speak with foreign tourists.

I have gestures in Japanese, Spanish, French and pretty much every other language. It looks like I am doing the hokey pokey but they get the point.

Yeah, I would never pay that much for them ('specially since you can download them in torrents for free). They're better than the vast majority of self-teaching language programs.

NOIS: Yeah it is kind of pricey. But the other option -- taking it at the UW, where I work -- would cost nearly two grand a semester for tuition.
