Thank God my mom cleaned out her own home when she moved to a retirement apartment!

She had been in that house for 35 years.

What went with her to the apartment was what would fit in the apartment and her small storage area.

Even then it was a real bitch to clean out her apartment after her death. We kids divided up her furniture and the stuff we each wanted and then had Mountain Mission come and cart off all the rest. They filled their truck with stuff.

We used to sales at people's homes as well. But dmb's aunt is living in a retirement community, if I remember correctly. They may have rules against auctions on site. Also, if all the good stuff is going with the auntie, there might not be enough to interest a quality auctioneer. There is more to an auction than someone showing up and holding up the broken lamp and crying for money. The back work of an auction is a lot of work. Is there someplace to display the merchandise? What about...

Yep. Down here we sell everything off the damn property. Want Shutters? Pry 'em off. The Mailbox? $5.

That's how it is at the end of the day. And the bEST part about not moving the stuff is YOU get to go through a lot of it that isn't priced, old...

Make sure that what you are selling will cover the cost of moving it to the auction house.

I hate to disagree with Mom but most of the time the auctions are held right there at the property. And usually some of it is garage sale and some of it they auction and they handle everything.

I think what matters is how much stuff and how much value we are talking. If it is a a slew of stuff auction it... otherwise just have a garage sale and set the prices low...

I used to work for an auction house. Make sure that what you are selling will cover the cost of moving it to the auction house. If there is decent furniture, china, etc., it might be worth it. Nobody is going to bid on a vintage collection of margarine tubs or old snow tires.

I've been trying to decide which route to go for my dad's stuff. My sister wants to have a garage sale, but I've been told it's much easier to have an auctioneer handle it all....which works for ME. Besides, there's a house full of furniture, so I would think an auction/estate sale is the best route....

Back in May my mom and I got rid of everything in her 3 story house in one day. I listed all big items on craigslist along with telling about the estate sale. We priced all items and we cleared out almost the whole fucking house. We were mobbed all day. I also listed the sale on craigslist. Fuck an auctioneer.

Auctions tend to be the norm around here. I went to one on Sunday, and got a sweet vanity for a dollar. I hope you do better at your sale.

Is there an agency for the aged in the area? They usually have some pretty good contacts.

We've done both - handling it personally, and hiring an estate liquidator.

When we did my husband's parents ourselves - it was a nightmare. We priced things low and people were coming back throughout the day and bringing others with them. ok i'm going down to florida next week. i'm pretty sure of the place my aunt will move into up here. she can bring her own furniture, and i'll probably have the car hauled up here, but the rest of the stuff, gotta go. who would i contact to find someone to just sell everything after she leaves? would a real estate agent be the best contact for that, once i get down there?
