So what are union dues these days, about hourly wage x 2.5 per month?
As I said this is my first union experience. I'd always assumed that people who worked for the union were now or once were employees of your company...? Not true?
Can you believe the prospect of a strike never even entered my mind when deciding my vote? How naive can I be? But to the best of my knowledge, there has never been a strike yet.

Sometimes... the union does seem like 'big business' tho, and it is sort of like that. Some of the big unionistas serve the union rather than the workers of the union. People can start off with good intentions and get derailed by the allure of a shiny political career rather than what their original job was.

The gains usually won via a strike never make up for the lost wages incurred during the strike. I have never understood that tactic. We have some clowns up here in Michigan who have been on strike for MONTHS, they will never get their lost wages made up for the rest of their working life. AND we have an 8.5% unemployement rate. My guess is the scabs who are crossing the picket line and working will end up with those jobs based on the progress of the talks for this strike. Idiots, all of them....

The effectiveness of different unions varies quite a lot. I've been in two unions and I'd say it takes some getting used to...the being agreeable with the union positions and such. I would consider myself to have been sort of a bad union member in my first experience cuz I didn't understand how unions worked and such...but still, even in retrospect that was a pretty weak union. I'm a good union guy now, but not quite a unionista.

I think my worthless union charges me about $46.00 per month. I can't see that they do anything for us. I tried to quit and they told me I'm not allowed to. Jerks.

Our last contract didn't come to resolution til 5 months after our old one expired, yet our stupid union couldn't even make our raises retroactive back to the date when the old contract expired.

She has been in the job for the exact same time as I have but is pretty much an extremely overpaid receptionist because all she does is take messages or pass the buck instead of helping anyone who calls. She seems to have attendance issues though so hopefully that will get rid of her eventually.

I doubt that. Most of the company had already been union for many years; my dept and some others are just now joining.
My company is a major major player in the pharmaceutical industry. They aint going nowhere any time soon.

This little shakeup sure has been amusing so far though. People are already "demanding the right" for a longer time for a meeting with the union...

First time ever for me.
Anybody have experience being in a Union? (to clarify, I'm not talking about experience dealing WITH Union WORKERS- we all know those horror stories)
Pros? Cons?
More security?
Better pay/benefits?, or does it all pretty much come out the same when everything's said and done?
