RVing is the only way to camp when you are over 40. We've done the "under the stars", "tent", "tent trailer"....but it is so great to have your own bathroom and shower, your own kitchen and sleep on a real bed. Of course where we go camping there are often critters that I would rather not share a sleeping bag with. (cougars, bears, bobcats, snakes).

We still cook some of the meals over the open fire because that's just what you should do....

Best part of camping when over 40: The wine and beer just taste better while watching the sunset.

Worst part of camping when over 40: Sleeping on the ground (with pad) often requires a follow-up chiropractic visit.

Camping in my 20's was fun - get drunk, have connubials in the tent, pass out.

Now in my 40's, with a lower alcohol tolerance and children, forgeddaboutit. Dr. Salt looks like hell after a weekend camping with our son for scouts.

Camping these days = hotel with no room service.

Do people in other countries (like in Europe) camp? Or is that something only retarded Americans do?

I just dropped my 19 year old son off for a weekend camping trip. He is going to be a YMCA day camp counselor for his summer job so the Y has all the counselors going on this orientation camping trip thing to get to know one another. He has to sleep in a tent and won't even have access to a shower. Oh the horror.

Cooking with the coals is the key. A baked potato fresh from about 45 minutes of being covered in HOT campfire coals... mmmmmmmm. Top it with butter and some sour cream, and it's tough to beat.

Oh, and don't forget the grilled cheese sammiches. Hot cocoa, too.
