One of my high school teachers got a divorce and came out of the closet with a bang my junior year. Chopped off her hair, took back her maiden name, and became the advisor for the gay-straight alliance.

Wait... my Gym teacher and our history teacher lived together. We all NEVER knew they were gay til we like got up in SrHigh and figured it out.

Our gym teacher went by her initials "CDY"

My next door neighbor. She was like 3 years older than me. She kicked ass in soccer. I so wanted to play soccer like her.
She went to West Point for college and then came out.
I remember one time behind the shed she showed me that she was growing pubes! If only I had been a little wiser back then, I think I passed up my chance for girl on girl experimentation.

My 4th grade teacher, Mr. Francis Alison (haha, he had two girl names). Anyways, at the time, none of us knew. He was the most popular teacher in the school handsdown. He was just so funny and nice and a really good teacher. Plus, he gave out homework passes. He wasn't what you'd consider feminine, but he wasn't what you'd consider manly either. You just knew by looking at him.

Also, there was a kid that I went to school with from kindergarten through high school...

My first gay was a friend of the family that mom had babysit us ONCE. I was like 13 and mom and dad were going away for the weekend so they asked Jeff to babysit. He was only 21. He played paperdolls with my sister. Yea we figured it out quickly.

He passed away about 10yrs ago and there were still people amazed he was gay. We were like "what? Really? You had no clue?"

Yeah, he came on overnight trips (replete with walkie talkies and code name). But I think he came on some day trips too. He was also a music teacher, so maybe there was an actual interest in what we were doing.

Friend from fifth grade. Looking back, he was obviously very nelly, but back then I didn't think it so strange that a 10-year old white boy was into Whitney Houston. Besides, GREATEST LOVE OF ALL was the "graduation song" everywhere at the time.

He's like crazy gay now (and coincidentally, his younger sister is a lesbian now, and she might've been the first lesbian I ever knew).

I don't remember that anyone being gay while growing up though my mom did once told me that two men liked each other because they are both very good looking and always invite guys over and never female. I thought it was cool because I assumed "liked" is a positive term plus they always give me stuff, too. In retrospect, it's obvious that my fourth grade teacher was gayer than Neil Patrick Harris during Fleet Week. Mr. Roy introduced me to musical theatre, positive male role models, and the notion that men can wear color. I didn't realize he was gay until my mom mentioned it in passing while we were discussing my friend's coming-out when I was sixteen. (Mr. Roy grew up in the same neighborhood as my mom.)
