Drew, I rewatched it to. He said something like he was choking, which I'm assuming was a move to be polite about what just happened. But, he clearly said "My throat was closing up - (to paula) YOU threw me, WHATEVER, it Threw me." It's like you heard the first part, put your hands over your ears and sang Oh Susana.

Do you really think, as the person who was to perform immediately after that, he decided it was a good time to eat a ham sandwich? Come on -...

What probably happened is pretty simple. The singers always do a dress rehearsal of their songs before the live show goes on the air, and the judges probably attend the dress most of the time, and start taking notes on what they're going to say on the air. Poor Paula, in her pills-and-booze haze, just confused the dress rehearsal with the live show, and started talking about songs that hadn't been performed on the air yet. Don't judge her. The same thing would happen to you...

Anybody wondering if Paula's mindless cheerleader routine actually has any effect on the show need look no futher than Jason Castro. Not only did her screwup probably generate enough sympathy votes to keep him out of the bottom 2, but he might not have tried out for the show at all if not for her. If Paula wasn't there, would any singer actually have the nerve to think (correctly, as it turns out) that they could get through practically an entire season of the show while totally baked...

If Paula was my family I'd try to get her off the drugs and alcohol and not exploit her issues for the entertainment of 30 million viewers. Maybe that's just me though.

I rewatched it last night. I think Paula was confusing Jason singing in his lower register and then upper register in one song with two songs.

The exchange after he sang his second song, which occurred immediately after Paula's gaff.

Jason: I was choking back stage, my throat was closing up
Paula: Jason, wawawawawawawaw
Jason: You threw me, whatever, it threw me
Paula: Jason, wawawawawawaw
