The game has tons of bugs so always keep a backup file or 2 in case the game decides to be an ass and prevent you from completing some quests. This wiki also has info on all the game's quests to help you.

Oblivion is one of those games you can put as much or as little effort into as you like. Just exploring the world is fun. Tackling the main quest is very challenging though, I think. But it isn't much fun upping your stats by endlessly swimming in a lake or blocking feeble hits from a rodent.
